Having recently celebrated Hey! Say! JUMP's fourth anniversary, we (
grayscale and yomimashou) felt it was time for a new post lauding the merits and fabulous talents of the group. Despite having been in existance for over four years as a debuted band, Hey! Say! JUMP seems to have a relatively small foreign following and a less active fandom than many other Johnny's groups. Whether because the group is so large or because the members are so young, Hey! Say! JUMP's popularity among foreign fandom seems to be less strong than the groups of their senpai. We hope to change that. The group's large number of members is daunting, and makes getting into the group seem difficult, but we hope to show how each member is loveable in his own way, and how each member contributes to the group dynamic. The youngest members seemed awfully young four years ago, but now, the entire band is over 18, with an average group age of 19⅔. Hey! Say! JUMP and its members have a lot to offer to fandom, from catchy music to talented actors and performers to lovable personalities, and we want to advertise all that and more to English-speaking fandom.
This post, of course, cannot feasibly be all-inclusive. We hope to point out a few major reasons why each member is amazing, amusing, and/or admirable, as well as highlight the friendships and relationships between members that make the group what it is. There's simply no way we can include every video, interview, photoshoot, and radio conversation. Additionally, since we're only human, there's no way that it can possibly be completely objective and non-opinionated, either. So, if you have any contributions, please please please put them in the comments! Tell us what else about your favourite member is amazing. Wax eloquent on the high points of your OTP. Any addendums to this in the comments would be loved and highly appreciated, and we hope that people who read this will stay to read the comments as well.

the group
Hey! Say! JUMP debuted on November 14, 2007 as a ten-member all-male j-pop group under the agency Johnny's and Associates. The group was created to follow in the footsteps of senpai groups V6, Arashi, and News and provide the theme song for the volleyball world cup. The creation of Hey! Say! JUMP followed on the heels of the temporary junior unit Hey! Say! 7 (not to be confused with the Hey! Say! subgroup of the same name), which sang the theme songs for the Lovely Complex anime.
The "Hey! Say!" in the group's name refers to the current Heisei period (beginning in 1989; 2012 is Heisei 24) in which all the members were born, and JUMP is an acronym for "Johnny's Ultra Music Power." It has been explained to mean "jumping into the next era," but seems to follow in the acronym names that Johnny's prefers.
The group is divided into two subgroups: Hey! Say! BEST, comprised of the five older members, and Hey! Say! 7, comprised of the younger members. Hey! Say! JUMP has released eight singles and one album, hosted Johnny's annual SUMMARY concert twice, and are scheduled to hold an around-Asia concert tour in 2012. At such a young age, they have already accomplished a lot, and the prospects look bright for their future!

Hey! Say! BEST is comprised of, from left to right, Yabu Kota, Takaki Yuya, Inoo Kei, Yaotome Hikaru, and Arioka Daiki. BEST is an acronym for Boys Excellent Select Team, and is the subgroup for the older members of the group.
Yabu Kota ☆ 薮 宏太
1990.1.31 ☆ Kanagawa ☆ A
Yabu is the oldest member of Hey! Say! JUMP. He joined Johnny's at age 11 and was a member of Ya-ya-yah prior to debuting with Hey! Say! JUMP. Yabu was recently accepted into Waseda University, and can play the guitar. Additionally:
• In the Your Seed making, while Takaki is talking to the camera, Yabu attempts to make out with a wall in the background, all the while looking at the camera. He seems to pull this sort of stunt regularly; in the Hey! Say! 2010 Ten JUMP concert in Osaka, he attempts to make out with a blow-up koala as well, assumably to get the crowd's attention.
• During the Magic Power PV making, Yabu wanders around between various members of the group and trolls (rather unsuccessfully) for attention.
☆ He tends to take a leadership/MC role despite not officially being the leader of the group. This can be seen during Shounen Club, Summary, Hey! Say! JUMP's concerts, and various other appearances.
☆ He is aware of the group and cares about his groupmates.
• In the words of Takaki, "When everyone gets emotional, Yabu-kun calmly reasons by saying 「With that ○○ reason, ○○ is also bad」. He's a dependable older brother! " [Popolo, January 2008]
☆ Yabu can be a very smooth talker, and knows the right things to say for various situations.
• Yabu: I know! If I could be born once again as a girl to give me an understanding of a girl's feelings, remember it and be born again as a guy, that would be great! Then I'll understand the feelings of whoever too and my mind will broaden. [Potato, Febrary 2008]
☆ However, he can also be very KY ("unable to read the atmosphere;" tactless, says things without thinking).
• Yabu (about Daiki): Recently, he's been wearing shirts randomly. In combo with his hat, it's a 'best co-ord'. His clothes have changed, but I don't understand why his height didn't (laughs). [Myojo, September 2011]

Though Yabu spends time with and looks out for everyone in the group, he has closer relationships with some particular members:

• During the Dreams Come True making-of video, he says that he wants to help Takaki accomplish his dream of becoming a big star.
• During the Magic Power making-of video, he spends a lot of time with Takaki, and seems proud of him for losing weight.
♡ He babies Chinen.
• During Hey! Say! JUMP's debut concert, he seems to have spent a lot of time holding Chinen in his lap or cuddling with him.
Takaki Yuya ☆ 高木 雄也
1990.3.26 ☆ Osaka ☆ O
Takaki is the second oldest member of the group, and gained major popularity when he played a leading role in the third season of Gokusen. Takaki was a member of JJ Express before being selected for the original Hey! Say! 7. On top of that:
• Takaki: I do have a TV in my room but I don’t turn it on because I’m spacing out all the time. [Myojo, April 2008]
• In a conversation between Yuto, Hikaru, and Chinen from Wink Up September 2008:
Yaotome: It came out immediately, Chinen’s poison. (laugh)
Nakajima: Come to think of it, do you also speak to Takaki-kun like this?
Takaki: Eh, to me? Hmm…
Chinen: Yuuyan, because he’s slow, he doesn’t notice it.
Takaki: That’s right. When I am around...
Inoo: He really doesn’t notice it (laughs)
• Hikaru: He's simpleminded, and has a lot of childish traits. That's the reason why, he talks about uninteresting things so pleasantly (laughs). He looks like he can play with a 100 yen toy for a week. [Myojo, September 2011]
☆ He has a habit of speaking rather bluntly.
• Takaki: Even if everyone says, "let's go here", I'd flatly say I don't want to. [Duet, November 2011]
☆ He's insecure about his weight-- in the Magic Power making-of video, he talks about how self conscious he is about being heavier than other members, and is jealous of Yabu's figure.

• First ever memory that you remember: I went to my grandfather’s house for house warming party. Then when we were throwing rice cake off the roof and I fell off the roof. [Myojo, April 2008]
• Memorable family vacation.: I went to Okinawa when I was in grade 3 or 4. I was still a child but I was playing in the adult pool and I drowned. But a man near me rescued me. During that time my parents were taking a video so I still have the video at home. Why didn’t you rescue me instead of video taping me! (laughs) [Myojo, April 2008]
• A serious injury you ever experienced: When I was a little kid I was playing around in a bathroom with a glass door and I didn’t noticed the glass and I ran into it shattering the glass. I don’t remember were but I was bleeding a lot so I went to the hospital. [Myojo, April 2008]

Inoo Kei ☆ 伊野尾 慧
1990.6.22 ☆ Saitama ☆ A
Inoo is JUMP's resident pianist. Before Hey! Say! JUMP, he was leader of JJ Express, and has been JUMP's only college student for the past few years, while he has been attending Meiji University. Also:
• "Inoo-kun is the one who checked the polaroids taken of him the most. Saying 「This one is better」 and choosing them seriously. " [Popolo, January 2008]
• "Grass man" by Nakajima [T/N - herbivorous man = girly man] Inoo-chan, isn't he most like a herbivorous man? After dancing a little, he'd say that he's "tired". He sounds like an old man (laughs).[Myojo, September 2011]
☆ Inoo loves being the center of attention and can be quite the attention whore.
• In the Mayonaka no Shadow Boy making-of video, Inoo seems to be digging for attention, wanting Yabu to notice his compliments and calling/texting his friends for no reason.
• According to Hikaru in Myojo August 2008:
Yaotome: That's a lie, isn't it? Because, when we talk, you usually lie. Because a while back too, I asked you 「Is school fun?」 and you replied with 「No, it's not fun at all. I don't have any friends...」 I thought it was true, I was worried!
Inoo: ...I'm sorry. (laugh) But I lie because I want to make Hikaru-kun care about me! Because, when we're on the train on the way home, even though I tell you 「Today, at school! When I was eating lunch!!」 with a smile, you'd start listening to music all of a sudden... (grows timid)

Inoo's friends include:
• In JUMParty, Inoo and Yabu joke around throughout the video, making up silly stories about playing Jenga as children and boasting that they know what the fabulous prize for the winner is.
• During the Magic Power making-of video, Inoo seems irritated with Yabu's attempts to be funny and get attention.
♡ Hikaru! Inoo seems to love to joke around with Hikaru.
• "Itsumen" by Inoo (about Hikaru) Because I'm with him more than any other member. When we were in a concert at my home town, together. "The usual [itsumo] member," abbreviated as, "Itsumen." He's talented [itsuzai], including the "unique [yuitsu]" meaning as well. [Myojo, September 2011]
• They spend much of the Mayonaka no Shadow Boy making-of video together, joking around and playing pranks on other members.
♡ Daiki! Inoo and Daiki were in JJ Express together, and seem close.

Yaotome Hikaru ☆ 八乙女 光

Hikaru is the goofy, lovable joker of Hey! Say! JUMP. During his years as a junior, he was in Ya-ya-yah with Yabu, and plays both the bass and the guitar, the former of which he plays with the JUMP band. Additionally:
• To quote
yomimashou, "the entire your seed making, srsly." He shouts "I'm water!" while flipping a water bottle, makes screeching noises with Inoo and Chinen, and generally is a goofball. • He gets really, really excited over a fruit burger.
• Inoo and Daiki think his one-man show is hilarious. [Myojo, April 2008]

Inoo: ...I'm sorry. (laugh) But I lie because I want to make Hikaru-kun care about me! Because, when we're on the train on the way home, even though I tell you 「Today, at school! When I was eating lunch!!」 with a smile, you'd start listening to music all of a sudden... (grows timid)
Yaotome: I'm "my pace". Surprisingly, I'm not good at talking to others. If I am spoken to, I'll explode from making myself understood.

Yaotome: I'm "my pace" so I didn't notice that. Even though we were on a train, going home, sitting right next to each other, talking. (laugh)
Inoo: It's okay, it's okay. After all, listening to music is more fun than talking to me, isn't it... (grows timid again)

Hikaru is a friendly guy, but some of his closest friends include:
• Hikaru: Even though there's times when he's serious, there are also times when he makes weird faces. He has many faces. I like Yabu when he's being goofy. [Popolo, January 2008]
♡ Inoo, with whom he goofs around a lot.
• Inoo: Hikaru is a strange person! He'll steal my bag while he's smirking, I'll say 「stop it~」 and chase after him, but he'll run away with a swoosh. He likes pranks. [Popolo, January 2008]
• Hikaru: 「Inoo Kei is a person who is my weak point」When Inoo-chan's talking and I say something like「annoying!」and he says「What? If you're going to say that kind of thing, then I won't talk」, I'm pretty weak for that frantic reaction. [Popolo, January 2008]
Arioka Daiki ☆ 有岡 大貴

Daiki is the youngest member of Hey! Say! BEST, and, like Takaki, was a member of JJ Express as a junior before being chosen for the original Hey! Say! 7. Daiki is the shortest member of BEST, a fact for which he is the butt of many jokes. Also:
• Daiki: One word to describe your personality: Positive. [Myojo, April 2008]

Inoo: But, the kindest is Dai-chan, ne.
Nakajima: Un, he's kind!
Asaka: Whenever I get that 『Calm down』 feeling, he speaks in a kind voice and it relieves me.
Inoo: Yeah, Dai-chan is really kind. Even if I don't return the things I borrow from him, he doesn't get mad.
Asaka: ...that's different from kindness. (laugh)
☆ He gets trolled by the other members of Hey! Say! JUMP.
• During the Mayonaka no Shadow Boy making-of video, there's a segment in which Hikaru and Inoo cover Daiki's head with hair clips.
• There are lots of photos of Daiki being trolled in various ways while asleep.
• Weakness: When people touch my belly button. The members think my reaction is funny so they often try to touch it. I wish they stopped! [Myojo, April 2008]

Daiki is a really friendly guy, and seems to get along with everyone, but there are a few people with whom his relationships seem particularly close.
• Daiki: Yama-chan is, thoughtful, kind, a kid with a good heart. Besides that, because he knows a lot about fashion, we talk a lot. [Myojo, April 2008]

Okamoto Keito ☆ 岡本 圭人

Okamoto Keito is the oldest member of Hey! Say! 7. His father, Okamoto Kenichi, was a member of the 80s Johnny's band, Otokogumi, and he taught Keito to play the guitar, which Keito now plays with JUMP band.
• Listen to his adorable British accent!
• He thinks that he's bad at kanji. [Seventeen, August 2011]
☆ He's shy and gets picked on a lot.
• During the Magic Power making-of video, he gets picked on by Daiki near the beginning and by everyone at the end.
☆ He's a crybaby.
• Recently cried about: During a lesson. When I couldn’t get the dance moves. It was tough because I was a trouble/bother for everyone. [Myojo, April 2008]
• In my case, the feeling of anger turns into tears. When I get blamed by the other person I become sad and go “Stop it~.” I’m quite a crybaby. I mean, just by saying “Stop it~” just now, I feel like crying. [Seventeen, August 2011]

Yamada: How rude! He mentions Dai-chan’s name when he’s doing a radio with me!
Chinen: Ryosuke...
Yamada: And this is 7’s corner! Don’t be such a fool!

• He spends a lot of time with Yuto during the Hey! Say! making-of video. Check out 1:10, where they play a hand-clapping game.
♡ Daiki! He goofs around with Daiki a lot.

Nakajima Yuto ☆ 中島 裕翔

Nakajima Yuto met early success with smaller roles in dramas such as Kimura Takuya's Engine and Nobuta wo Produce, starring Kamenashi Kazuya and Yamashita Tomohisa. Before being placed in the temporary Hey! Say! 7, he was a member of both Tap Kids and JJ Express. Currently, he plays the drums with JUMP band. Also:
• Daiki: Frankly, he's mischevious. If you call attention to his prank, he'll do the same thing one more time on purpose (*laugh*). In some ways, he's a lively mood-maker. [Popolo, January 2008]
• In many making-of videos, such as Hey! Say!, Mayonaka no Shadow Boy, and Over, he is
• Hikaru: Even though he's mature during work, he's usually annoying (*laugh*). Doing things like banging against the desk and shouting. I wonder a lot about how he can be that noisy. [Popolo, January 2008]
☆ He's a carefree and easygoing guy who's not afraid of being embarrassed.
• When asked whether they would travel to the past or the future, other members of HS7 wanted to go to the past to change or redo things, but Yuto wanted to go to the future. I hope the world is like the “star wars.” [Potato, May 2008]
• He has no qualms about getting into a duffel bag.
☆ He has lots of hobbies, and in TV Guide's Johnny's general election, was voted the Johnny's talent with the most hobbies by four HSJ members.

☆ He's ridiculously tall (180 cm is the most recent number I can find, or almost 5'11" in English measurements!) and has a really sexy neck. No, really.

Yuto seems to get along with others, especially Hey! Say! 7, well. In particular:
• Q. How many people can you call as your best friend? A. Just one. An English boy, who suddenly appeared at Odaiba concert one day. Maybe it’s not the right way to put it as best friend but I love Keito. His personality is really great and I don’t think there’s anyone who’d talk bad about Keito. [Wink Up, July 2009]

Chinen Yuri is the youngest member of the group, and was a member of the original Hey! Say! 7 before debuting with Hey! Say! JUMP. Chinen's dream from childhood was to become a member of Johnny's, and has long idolized Arashi's Ohno Satoshi. Additionally:
• He spends his time with both BEST and 7 during making-of videos and such, and seems to want attention from everyone.
• Who is the most spoiled in johnny's? MATSUJUN: Yuri Chinen (Hey! Say! JUMP). Not really spoilt, I guess. It’s just that he really likes our leader (Ohno), and I’ve seen him mention our leader again and again in every magazine I’ve looked at. The way he acts like a little brother I think. SHO: Yuri Chinen (Hey! Say! JUMP). Because he loves Ohno-kun apparently. He said so in a magazine. [Monthly TV Guide, February 2011]
• He flirts with his senpai, eg: In Wink Up March, 2011, Chinen wrote the following message: Hey!Say!JUMP, Chinen Yuri To Fujigaya-kun-who-looks-good-wearing-hats, Everything went well for our conerts. What's Kisumai's tour like this time? Fujigaya-kun, I'm watching your drama. Please work hard! In Wink Up April 2011, Fujigaya responded, Kis-My-Ft2, Fujigaya Taisuke To Chinen-kun-who-looks-good-in-hats, I happened to get to see your con's dress rehearsal and we got to talk there, but I didn't get to go watch the actual concert because I had filming. I trust Chinen melted the fans' hearts and made them squee. But please melt my heart even more than that.
☆ He's the baby of the group, and cuddles with people and sits in their laps.

• It seems that when there are no plans, he goes home from school and sleeps at 6PM. Chinen: Yesterday and two days ago, I came home from school at 4 and fell asleep. When I was in elementary school, my mom was a gymnastics teacher, so I often went to play in the gymnasium that had a classroom, but I fell asleep standing up on a rolled up mat in the storage room. • In Potato April 2011, both Yamada and Chinen himself say that Chinen is the quickest on the uptake out of NYC.
• It seems that his grades are all 5’s and he’s really smart. (T/N: 5’s are the equivalents of A’s in the western grading system.) Chinen: When I was a first year high school student, it was all fives, but lately that’s not true. Right now, I’m really bad at language arts. When he sleeps on hard places, I fold a towel into a pillow and put it under his head. And when he falls asleep in the car, there are times when he leans on me. Prior to the summer of 2011, Hey! Say! JUMP had a tenth member, Morimoto Ryutaro. However, on June 28th, 2011, photos of Ryutaro smoking while underage were published, and, following the example set with older idols such as Uchi Hiroki, Johnny's and Associates suspended Ryutaro's activities indefinitely. Recently, news (though of questionable origin) has surfaced that Ryutaro does not plan to return, and will instead focus on his studies. However, should any change be made to the current status quo, this post will (hopefully) be updated to reflect that.
